New York Academics is not currently seeking new tutors. However, if you wish to be considered for future work, you may submit a cover letter and resume, which will be kept on file.
New York Academics Contracting Guidelines
Any tutor with whom we work must have:
- A minimum of 2 years of K-12 teaching and/or tutoring experience. Volunteer tutoring may count towards this total. Teaching and/or tutoring experience should be in an academic field and with an age group relevant to the specific areas for which New York Academics is currently recruiting.
- High standardized test scores. On the SAT I, no subject may be below 650 and at least one subject must be above 700. An applicant may substitute ACT or GRE scores in the 95 th percentile or above for SAT scores. An applicant with 5 or more years of teaching and/or tutoring experience may be considered without standardized test scores.
- At least 3 positive professional references.
- Successfully completed an interview which will consist of:
- A sample lesson in which the tutor applicant teaches a mini-lesson on a subject of his or her choice to the interviewer(s).
- A knowledge check in which the tutor applicant answers questions about the subject(s) he or she wishes to teach.
- A discussion of the tutor's geographic and temporal availability.
- A discussion of expectations and compensation.
- A background check. Potential tutors will be fingerprinted and the fingerprints will be used to perform New York State and FBI background checks.
In addition to the above requirements, successful tutor applicants will be qualified in and excited about the specific subjects and age groups for which New York Academics is currently recruiting.

This position requires the ability to enunciate terms clearly and correctly, to comprehend spoken English on the phone and in person, to orally point out mistakes on written papers, to clearly write words and symbols, and to read typed and handwritten material. The tutor will have the ability and means to get to and from New York Academics' clients. The applicant will have a working phone through which he or she may be reached by New York Academics.
